One of Wollongong’s favorite sporting stars is coming home! Glen Saville is returning “home” to the ahm Hawks following a season with the Sydney Kings.
Saville who has strong ties in Wollongong has played 13 of his 14 NBL seasons as a Hawk. His return to the 2008 ahm Hawks is sure to make fans excited about the Hawks prospects in 08/09.
Saville is a huge asset to our team. The people of Wollongong have
always embraced him, and still cheered for him when he returned to the
Sandpit with the Kings to play against us. To have such leadership back
in the team both on and off court will be extremely valuable.” Said
Hawks Director Richard Clifford.
Currently training with the Boomers for the Beijing Olympics under
ex-Kings coach Brian Goorjian, Sav is excited about his return to
Wollongong.
Saville is the ahm Hawks all time highest scorer with a total 5506
points, just ahead of best mate Mat Campbell who went past Sav on the
Hawks most games played list late last season, Sav sits on 395.
What does it mean for the ahm Hawks this season?
Head Coach Eric Cooks is more than pleased with the addition to the
roster stating “I am thrilled to have signed Sav for the next two
years. I believe he was a missing link from our team last year. His
leadership role is obvious and we have definitely secured one of the
best players in the country”.
“I am confident we have made a decision that will work for the club on
many levels, we are all looking forward to his return this season.”
Cooks added
Sav joins a list of former Hawks returning to Wollongong after stints with the Sydney.
Geordie McLeod spent the 1983 season in Sydney with the Supersonics
(before they became Kings), then Brett Flannigan's three seasons on
court with Hawks were sandwiched around the 1984 season in Sydney.
Greg Hubbard & Justin Withers book-ended their careers at the Hawks, each had a three year stint with Kings in between.
Star import Melvin Thomas left for Kings in 1996 and returned in the
99/2000 season to help lead Hawks to the Championship a year later.
