Wednesday, 11 June 2008

news-2008-06-12-rhysmartinThe ahm Hawks roster is beginning to take shape with the announcement of a one year contract with former Brisbane Bullets Development player Rhys Martin.

Rhys has been on Coach Cook’s radar as a feisty addition to the backcourt this season. “He will bring some young legs to the squad this year; I believe Rhys has a big future in this league.” Cooks said.

The Cairns born Aussie spent 2 years in the US college system playing for NSU- Fort Lauderdale, returning home to chase a career in the Australian League.

“He captained the under 20’s Australian National side and has proved himself worthy of a spot in the league with his impressive performance and excellent ball handling skills” said Coach Cooks.

After a development year with the Bullets Rhys is looking forward to coming to the ahm Hawks. “I have heard great things about Wollongong, I am good mates with Cam Tragardh from high school and we also played together in the Southern Districts, it will be great to play together again” Rhys said.

Rhys, currently playing for the Rockhampton Rockets, has shown some impressive numbers, shooting 39pts against the Mackay Meteors earlier this season. The Rockets are a favorite for the Grand Final which may keep Martin from arriving in Wollongong until late August, however he is determined to begin training with the ahm Hawks as soon as he can.

Returning ahm Hawks fan favorite and 2007/2008 NBL Most Improved player Cameron Tragardh has also been a tear in the QABL , picking up Player of the Week in round 7 with a QABL season best 50pts.

Shooting at 69% Tragardh helped lead the Northside Wizards to victory and they currently sit at 2nd spot on the ladder.

The combination of these two Queenslanders will definitely be something to watch out for this season.
